Rising house prices and growing families means that more and more homeowners are having to be smart to make the most of the space in a smaller house.

However, it’s not always easy to know how to utilise all the space your home has to offer.

You may not realise it but even the smallest home can be made to feel bigger than it actually is.

Our team has compromised a list of our favourite tricks to maximise space in a smaller house, so your home needn’t feel small.

  1. Under-stair storage

The space under the stairs is often forgotten about in terms of storage, yet it holds so much valuable space.

So if your home is in need of extra storage space, under-stair storage might just be what your home needs.

You could store the vacuum cleaner, or even turn it into a mini-pantry to store long-life food.

  1. Open plan living

It may sound drastic but by knocking down some walls you can create a more open living space that feels much larger.

Before you go grabbing the sledgehammers, it’s probably best to call in the experts.

One common style of open living space is removing the wall between the living room and the kitchen/diner, creating a much bigger room. You could even cut the wall out to create an archway, keeping the effect of a wall, whilst making it more open.

  1. Go bigger with your windows

It’s easy for small homes to feel claustrophobic but by installing bigger windows you can create a lighter, airier space – creating the illusion of a bigger space.

Let light and the outside in.

  1. Shelves, shelves and more shelves

Shelves are a great way to add storage without taking up precious floor space. Looking for extra storage space? Add a shelf (or two).

  1. Paint it white

One of the simplest yet effective ways to create a sense of extra space is by adding white throughout your home. White is perfect for making things look bigger and brighter.

It may be white-painted walls or white window frames; make your home feel larger and airier by choosing white.

Interested in larger windows?

There are so many ways you can make your home feel bigger regardless of its size. All it takes is a bit of creativity and thought.
